Why We Started Proto — A Veteran's Story

Proto was built by veterans who found yoga and couldn't find gear that matched the seriousness of the practice. Here's the story of why we built it ourselves.

Why We Started Proto — A Veteran's Story

This is the story of why Proto exists. It's a simple story, but it's ours — and we think it matters for understanding what we're building and why.

The Gap

When veterans come home, they bring their physical and mental discipline with them. The structure of service — the PT, the training, the daily physical practice that was simply part of the job — doesn't have an automatic civilian equivalent. Finding practices that match the intensity, the purpose, and the rigor of military training requires intention.

Yoga became that practice for the people who built Proto. Not because it was easy or immediately comfortable — the first sessions were humbling in the way that anything genuinely hard is humbling. But because it worked. It addressed physical patterns that service had created. It built recovery capacity. It developed a kind of mental resilience that complemented the physical work we were already doing.

And then we looked at the gear available to support the practice, and found a gap.

The Gear Problem

The yoga gear market had two modes: cheap products that didn't last, and premium products that prioritized aesthetics over performance. Neither reflected the seriousness we brought to the practice.

We wanted a mat that was built to the standard a serious athlete would demand. We wanted a bag that was actually designed to carry gear rather than to look good on a hook. We wanted apparel that was built to train in, not to photograph. We wanted equipment that matched the commitment of the practice itself.

When we couldn't find it, we built it.

The IronHide

The IronHide Leather Yoga Mat was the first product that defined what Proto was going to be. Full-grain leather, handcrafted, designed for athletes who train hard and demand equipment that keeps up. A mat that gets better with use instead of degrading. A mat with two surfaces — smooth for standard practice, grainy for hot yoga — because serious practitioners don't want to own two mats when one can do both jobs better.

It was not a conventional product. It was not going to appeal to everyone. It was built for a specific person with a specific relationship to their practice — and that person, we were confident, existed in large numbers.

The Mission

Proto is about more than yoga gear. It's about the conviction that physical and mental health are not separate — that the practice of taking care of your body is inseparable from the practice of taking care of your mind. That showing up for the daily work, without fanfare, without needing to be inspired, is one of the most important things a person can do for themselves and everyone around them.

We are veteran owned. We are building something real. We are early, the community is growing, and every person who finds us and believes in what we're doing makes the mission more possible.

We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. We are with you.

Fail Forward. Join the Fight.

Leather mat care terms

Our IronHide Leather Mats are crafted from premium full-grain leather. As a natural material, each mat will develop character over time and may feature unique markings such as scars, grain variation, stretch marks, branding, and other natural characteristics. These are not defects — they are inherent qualities of authentic leather and make every mat one of a kind.

By proceeding with your purchase, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and understand the care instructions provided. Proper conditioning, cleaning, and storage are required to maintain the integrity and longevity of your mat. You accept that natural variations and signs of wear are expected features of genuine leather and are not grounds for return or exchange.
